This product provides improved underwater communication using underwater optical modems including optical transmitters and optical receivers that allow omnidirectional transmission and reception of optical signals over distances of approximately 100 m at data rates greater than 1 Mbit/s. This product also provides for underwater communication networks having a plurality of optical modems communicating with each other.

Today at Oceanology International, Sonardyne International Ltd (Stand G300) announced the creation of a new joint venture company with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The spinout company, called Lumasys, is to launch the first commercially available subsea optical communication system, BlueComm.
